Obituary for Richard "Dick" Shell

Richard "Dick"  Shell
SHELL, Richard age 94, of Englewood, passed away Tuesday May 16, 2017. He was born on October 14, 1922 in New Salem, Oh to the late Rolland and Georgia Shell. He graduated from Newark High School in 1941, Wittenberg University in 1948. He played football at Newark and Wittenberg. Later, attended The Ohio State University for his master’s degree of Arts in Education. He proudly served the U.S. Marine Corps; where he was a Lieutenant during the WWII and Korea War. He started his long education career as a social science teacher and coach and later the superintendent of Amity Schools in Knox County. He moved to Hartford Local School District in Croton, Ohio as their Executive Head and later became the first principal of the new Northmont High School. He retired in 1979 as Assistant Superintendent of Northmont Schools. As an avid cyclist, he participated in the Senior Olympics when he was 75 years old and has ridden over 5000 miles each year since 1995 until 2010.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Helen Shide Shell; brother Paul Shell; step-sister Ruth Samson and step-brother Ted Shell.

He is survived locally by his cousin Jean Plunkett and husband Milton, and special neighbors Nancee and Mike Desch. Throughout the area and around the world there are cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and hundreds of students whose lives he has touched.

A graveside service will be held 10AM Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery 750 Union Road, Englewood, Ohio. A celebration of life reception will follow at the Northmont Middle School Gym, 4810 National Rd., Clayton, Oh. 45315, 11:30 am.
