Patricia (Patty Shay) Smith

Mary will be greatly missed. I was one of her student teachers. I helped both in Dayton and Centerville. I was one of the Hiatt-etts and was co-captain one year. When I was young I could hardly wait until I was old enough to move to Wednesday night classes (in Dayton) with the big girls and wear the silver high heel tap shoes and dance on toe in ballet. I started classes when the studio was downtown and remember thinking how small the new studio was when she moved. The new studio however was within walking distance to my house. My mother was one of the back stage moms and I remember her making my costumes for my private classes. I look back on those days and they always bring a smile to my face, even the embarrassing moments. One memory was when we were at a nursing home performing. I was doing my solo hula dance when my skirt started to fall. I kept tugging at it as I continued to dance. I was so relieved when the part came where I could kneel and do the hand motion on my knees. However when I stood up to finish my dance my skirt ended up down around my ankles. I finished my dance and ran off the stage. Thank you for instilling in me the quality needed to continue what I started even in adversity.
