Obituary for Mary J "Joan" Ritter

RITTER, Mary Joan age 74 of Dayton passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018. She was preceded in death by her loving husband 36 years, Steve; parents, William and Elsie Neaves; brother, William Jr.; sisters, Janet Neaves Carr and Helen Neaves Miller. She is survived by her daughters, Caren (Don) Sanns and Stephanie (Sean) Olson; grandchildren, Ryan and Cathryn Sanns and Carly and Hans Olson; and loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Joan went to Neptune High School and went on to Ann May School of Nursing graduating in the class of 1965. She worked at Fitkin Memorial Hospital in the pediatric unit. After taking time off to raise a family she returned to nursing in geriatrics, retiring in 1995. Joan married her high school sweetheart Steve in 1967. They had a loving devoted relationship. Joan and Steve had the ideal marriage. They lead a good Christian life in the service of others; Steve as a policeman and Joan as a nurse. In 2003 Steve passed away and Joan continued to care for her family and friends. She was always available to give medical help, advice, baked goods, and hugs. In 2005 Joan relocated to Dayton to live with her daughter and family. For this next chapter of life she enjoyed her grandchildren, helped with school events, girl scouts, and church activities. Since November 2015 Joan has lived in Spring Hills Singing Woods Memory Care. She enjoyed her time there making friends with the residents and staff. In her final days she was surrounded by friends and family. The love she gave was returned to her tenfold. Her smile brightened many lives and that joy was returned when she was finishing out her earthly journey. The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion shown by her Spring Hills “family.” Private memorial service will be held in New Jersey at a later date. Donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association in Joan’s memory.
