Obituary for Walter H. "Walt" Peck

PECK, Walter Howard, “Walt” age 87, passed away May 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, after a two-week illness at Hospice of Dayton. Walt was born July 29, 1930, the third child of Verna and Clifford Peck. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Ann, and five children: Linda (Don) Carroll of Sidney OH, Janice Wilson Hiemer of Durango CO, Nancy Mueller of Sacramento CA, David (Adria) Peck of Indianapolis, and Stephen (Michelle) Peck of Union KY; eight grandchildren: Michael & Jeffrey (Shannon) & Paul Wilson, Alexandra (Adam) Lesko, Ashley Peck, and Maggie, Anna, & Stevie Peck; and one great-grandchild Olivia Rose Lesko. He was preceded in death by an infant son, his mother & stepfather Verna & Ray Little, his sister Jean and brothers Clarence & Jim. Walt was always a faithful and active member of his church and the social organizations he served. He loved baseball, golf, hunting, and his many friends. In baseball he was a noted local catcher, pitcher, & team manager into his fifties. The thrill of his life came when son Dave went into pro-baseball. In 1991, Walt was an inductee into the Dayton Softball Hall of Fame, and he served ten years on the committee for the Gregg Nischwitz Memorial Baseball Tournament. Walt was a founding member of the Kiser High School Alumni Association. He was an engineer at the Sheffield Corp. for 30 years. In retirement, he joined the staff at Trinity Lutheran Church (Dayton) for 13 years where he was a member for 51 years before joining Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. He loved gardening and tending his lawn. He loved his family and their frequent “PeckFests” to celebrate birthdays and holidays. He will be dearly missed by his family and a host of friends at church, from Kiser, and in sports. Friends and relatives will gather from 5-8 pm on Thursday, May 17, at Baker, Hazel & Snider Funeral Home, 5555 Philadelphia Dr. at N. Main St. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 9100 N. Main St., Englewood, by Pastor Stephen Gettinger.
