Obituary for James S Phelps Sr.

James S  Phelps Sr.
Phelps, James S. Sr. "Chief", age 90, of Dayton, passed away at his home on March 23, 2017. He is preceded by his parents, Hairm and Pearl Phelps; sisters, Betty Terhune and Nellie Martin; brother, Vola Phelps Jr., and his son, James "Jimmy" Phelps Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jewell Baker Phelps; grandchildren: James Phelps III (Shawna) of Middletown, Shannon McGuire (Brian) of Paris, KY, and Lacy Madison of Dayton; 7 great-grandchildren, special nephew, Doug Martin and numerous other nieces and nephews. Chief retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve with over 41 years of active duty service. He was a proud WWII, Korean and Vietnam veteran. Chief also retired from Delco Moraine Division of GM after his time in the service. He was a member of John W. Durst Lodge 716 and Valley of Dayton Scottish Rite. Funeral Services will take place at 10:00am on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Baker-Hazel & Snider Funeral Home, 5555 Philadelphia Dr. Dayton, OH 45415, with Rev. Pamela Gaylor officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Grove Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 5:00pm until 6:00pm on Monday, March 27, 2017. Memorial contributions may be made in the memory of James “Chief” Phelps Sr. to Vitas Hospice or the American Heart Association.
