Obituary for Ludolph Hendrik van der Hoeven

Ludolph Hendrik van der Hoeven
van der Hoeven, Ludolph Hendrik, MD, PhD, age 95, of Kettering, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015. He was born June 3, 1919 in Utrecht, Netherlands, son of the late Pieter Abraham and Aleida Johanna (Scheltus van Ijsseldijk) van der Hoeven. Ludolph started piano lessons at age 7 and showed early musical talent. He went to the Medical School of Utrecht and graduated with an MD in 1942 and obtained a PhD in Pathology in 1951.

He served in the Dutch Army from 1939-1940. During the German Occupation (1940-1945) he participated in underground activities and helped Jews escape to England. Ludolph was captured twice by the Germans, once escaping by jumping from a speeding train.

He married fellow medical student Francine Christine Theodora Adèr on August 20, 1945. He said “It was the best thing he ever did!” In July 1950 Ludolph, Francine and their four children moved to the Caribbean island of Curacao, where Ludolph served as pathologists/coroner in the Netherlands Antilles. This was where they received sponsorship to the United States. On May 9, 1955 the young family immigrated to the US.

He practiced and taught pathology in the Netherlands and in the US at OSU in Columbus, OH and at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, OH from 1962-1992. Honors were awarded to him as co-founder and president of the Community Blood Center in Dayton, OH and as founder of the Ohio Association of Blood Banks. He served as president of the Association of Clinical Scientists, and developed Ultrachem Biotechnical Laboratories.

Ludolph was a board member of the Dayton Art Institute where he co-founded their Oktoberfest fundraiser and donated antique Dutch furniture and books. He was also on the boards of Dayton Philharmonic, Cox Arboretum, Wegerzyn Gardens, Planned Parenthood, Dayton Bach Society, Dayton Chamber Music Society, Vangaurd Concerts and Wright State University Museum and Arts Department. He was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club of Dayton and the Moraine Society.

Ludolph was a frequent performer of classical solo, chamber and concerto piano music, both locally and nationwide; including his life dream performance at Carnegie Hall. He was a pupil of the famed Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio. He painted landscapes, portraits and still life. He had several one-man art exhibit shows and was a pupil of the renowned Frank Mason of New York.

Together with his late wife, Francine, they were well loved hosts to their friends, music, art and gardening organizations. They generously opened their home and gardens filled with beautiful peonies on Park Road in Oakwood. The Oakwood City Council recognized them as “exemplary citizens”. He found great joy in his charming wife and family and in their music making, in which Francine assisted by turning the pages of musical scores when playing classical music.

Dr. van der Hoeven is survived by his four children: Liliane Johnson of Morgantown, WV; Francie (Ronald) Camp of Dayton; Carlijn (Douglas) Koch of Phoenix, AZ and Willem (Hollie) van der Hoeven of Breckenridge, CO; seven grandchildren: Samantha and David Johnson, Julia (Sam) Kurcaba, Kari (Kevin) O’Neal, Peter Koch, Willem and Alexandra van der Hoeven; and three great-grandsons: Dylan Johnson, Wyatt O’Neal and Wesley Kurcaba. Ludolph was preceded in death by his very dear wife of 62 years, Francine, on 1-16-2008; and their son Bart Pieter on 3-21-1965 at the age of 17.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 11:00 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W Dixon Ave, Oakwood, Rev Sammons officiating.
