Obituary for Annabel Lee Zimmers (Pierce)
ZIMMERS, Annabel Lee, age 102, was born to Harry and Ramona Pierce, on June 19, 1912 in Newark, Ohio. Annabel was raised in Granville, OH, graduating from Granville High School in 1929 and from Denison University in 1933. Following graduation, Annabel was employed by the Library of Congress in Washington DC working in classification and the Books for the Blind. In 1939, she married Neal F. Zimmers, whom she met at Denison. Upon moving to Dayton, Ohio, Annabel became involved in various civic groups, serving on the board for Family Services and the Child Guidance Center; as District President of Child Conservation League and a charter member of PEO Chapter CV. An active partner in her husband's political career, she chaired the 17th Ward Democratic Club and served as a voting precinct judge for 20 years. Annabel remained active in Kappa Kappa Gamma, the College Women's Club, Green Acres Garden Club, Vandalia Sister Cities, Vandalia-Butler Historical Society, and 1st Presbyterian Church in Granville, Ohio, where she was the longest standing member of the church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Judge Neal Zimmers Sr. Annabel was the beloved matriarch and mainstay of her family, providing comfort and guidance to her children Neal Jr. (Billie) Zimmers, Elaine Zimmers Johnson, Craig (Sharon) Zimmers, her grandchildren, Nathan, AnneElise, Stefanie, Tyler and Andrea, her seven great grandchildren, and four nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by her family and her many friends.
Memorial services 11 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Baker-Hazel & Snider Funeral Home 5555 Philadelphia Dr. at N. Main by Rev. Dick Van Tine. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Judge Neal and Annabel Zimmers Scholarship Fund in care of The Dayton Foundation 40 N. Main St. Suite 500 Dayton, OH 45423.
